Akihiko Konagaya, Dr. Eng.
Project Director, Advanced Genome Information–
Technology Research Group, RIKEN Genomic Sciences Center
Akihiko Konagaya was born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1955. He currently holds the position of Project Director, Advanced Genome Information Technology Research Group, RIKEN Genomic Sciences Center. He is also a Visiting Professor in the Computer Science Department, Tokyo Institute of Technology, and President of the Initiative of Parallel Bioinformatics, a nonprofit organization.
Mr. Konagaya received a B.S. in Information Science from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1978, an M.S. in 1980, and a D.E. in 1995.
Mr. Konagaya was a Researcher for NEC Corporation from 1980–1997; an Adjunct Associate Professor for TITECH from 1996–1997; a Professor at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology from 1997–2003; RIKEN GSC Team Leader from 2000–2003; Project Director from 2003 to the present; and a Visiting Professor at TITECH from 2003 to the present.
Mr. Konagaya coauthored Genes and Computers, Kyoritsu Shuppan, 2000 (in Japanese); and Grid
Computing in Life Science, Springer, 2005. He has contributed more than 70 articles to professional journals and international conferences in the field of computer science and bioinformatics. In addition, he was the recipient of the Best Paper Award from the Information Processing Society Japan in 1999.
Among his academic contributions, Mr. Konagaya has been Program Chair, International CBI Conference (CBI2005); Program Chair, International Life Science Grid Workshop (LSGRID2004); Director, Chem-Bio Informatics Society (2004– ); Area Editor, Journal of New Generation Computing
(1997– ); Councilor, Japanese Society of Artificial Intelligence (2001–2002, 2004– ); Councilor, Japanese Society for Bioinformatics (2000–2001, 2005– ); and Program Cochair, Genome Information Workshop (GIW2000). Mr. Konagaya’s research themes include Life Science Grid Computing,
Cell Simulation, Ontology, and Workflow.
Manuel T. Lowenhaupt, M.D.

Dr. Lowenhaupt is a Partner at Accenture and the National Practice Leader for Clinical Transformation. He is internationally noted for his work in clinical effectiveness, care management, and clinical informatics. In his 15 years of consulting, he has worked with more than one hundred and twenty healthcare organizations in the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Far East. Dr. Lowenhaupt received his undergraduate degree from MIT and his M.D. from Harvard Medical School.
Jacques Mulder, Principal

Jacques Mulder is a Principal within the life sciences and healthcare practice of Deloitte Consulting LLP and serves as the lead partner in Deloitte’s Pharmaceutical R&D practice. Jacques has over 15 years of Life Sciences experience, including leading Strategic Research and serving as Senior Vice President of Integrated Strategic Solutions for a large pharmaceutical research consulting firm. Jacques’ background includes senior management positions in Quintiles Transnational, where he was responsible for Phase IIIb and Phase IV clinical operations in the U.S. and Canada as well as serving as Practice Director for The Lewin Group, a premier strategic consulting and market research firm. Jacques spent 10 years in the pharmaceutical industry, serving on many international
assignments. During his time in the industry he launched six major products, three of them achieving sales in excess of US$1 billion. He has focused his career on competitive strategy and other consulting functions, including corporate strategy, R&D portfolio strategy and marketing strategy, clinical development, data management, and bio statistics. Jacques possesses
significant technical and managerial experience in the pharmaceutical industry. He holds an M.B.A from Edinburgh Business School and undergraduate degrees in Physiology and Biomechanics from Clemson University and The University of Pretoria ( South Africa).
Jeff Perry
Program Director, New Ventures
Philips Medical Systems
Jeff Perry is a Program Director for Philips Medical Systems’ New Ventures group. He is responsible for Motiva, Philips’ novel broadband-enabled platform for remote patient management services, brought to market in 2005.
Mr. Perry has more than 20 years experience in the medical device industry. Prior to this role, Mr. Perry
worked for Agilent Technologies and Hewlett-Packard’s healthcare businesses in such areas as electronic medical records, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, anesthesia monitoring, and three-dimensional ultrasound.
Mr. Perry holds a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Redlands.
