Proactively detect and resist attacks
Recent innovations from HP Labs focus on the proactive protection of IT infrastructures. HP is building more intelligence into network components so they can better detect and resist attacks.

Active Countermeasures and virus throttle for Proliant servers and Procurve switches are just two examples of innovative solutions developed by HP Labs that HP has deployed to protect our own network since 2002, proving that it is possible to accelerate new solutions to security problems from the research lab into production. Attacks that cause widespread disruption at other companies now generate no more than localized impact at HP. Even better, after proving that this technology works in HP’s own worldwide infrastructure, we have made these solutions available to our customers in HP’s services and products.

What is Active Countermeasures?
Created by HP researchers in response to the Code Red attack, Active Countermeasures scans HP’s network of 300,000 devices twice a day to detect vulnerable systems. Its systematic use has limited the damage caused by recent attacks, including NIMDA and Sasser. Active Countermeasures is designed to detect and mitigate vulnerable systems in advance of an attack, and so help protect your critical infrastructure until you can develop and apply a patch. Because of its dependency on patch management and other customer-specific systems, Active Countermeasures is delivered as a customized service from HP Services.

What is the HP Virus Throttle?
HP Virus throttle is a feature that is now available for Proliant servers running Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 and switches such as the Procurve 5300. HP Virus Throttle is designed to detect abnormal behavior exhibited by a propagating virus and take action to limit network connections, halting the ability of the virus to continue spreading. At the same time, HP Virus Throttle signals the presence of the virus to the system administrator, allowing them to take fast action to close off the vulnerability.

HP Labs continues working on many new approaches to develop innovative security solutions across a wide spectrum of technology. Because we know the value of testing solutions in the real world, researchers work with HP’s IT and security staff to deploy and test solutions on HP’s own infrastructure. HP is committed to drive security research to proactively prevent and suppress security attacks. To find out more about HP Labs security research, see the:
