	HP supports a showcase project for the whole of Portugal

Lusitânia is an advisory body to the Portuguese Government, specializing in e-development strategies for the Viseu region – an inland area in the centre of the country which includes 16 towns and 50,000 people.

Concerned with extending the information society, Lusitânia is involved with the distribution of funds from the European Union, launching and implementing e-government and e-business strategies designed to stimulate healthy inter-regional development.

It focuses on three main areas – forests, educational courses for small to medium sized businesses (SMB) and the spread of the information and knowledge society. As well as using technology to make government operations more transparent for the citizens, it provides a wide variety of services for some 180 clients and also supports critical processes for fire prevention and fire fighting for the forestry service.

Challenges

Portuguese advisory body Lusitânia recently embarked on the ViseuDigital project aimed at developing the information and knowledge society to create economic value for its region.
To support the project, it needed the advice of an expert technology partner in creating a state-of-the-art datacentre.
It also needed swift local support to ensure the high availability of its critical systems.

Solution

HP installed an HP StorageWorks EVA 3000 for central data storage
HP OpenView Data Protector was provided for the efficient management of backup
Networking was supported by ProCurve 2824 series and HP is also providing datacentre management and maintenance on a three year contract.

Results

The ViseuDigital e-services run efficiently to support local companies and institutions and to improve the standard of life for local citizens.
ViseuDigital is one of 25 similar projects throughout Portugal and works so well that it is used as a showcase for others to follow.
The project is increasing the sustainability of the entire region.
