Mobility solutions for government

Whether it’s responding to disasters, providing medical care on a battlefield, fortifying electronic check points at an airport or enabling legislators to collaborate instantly, all government organisations need ready access to quality information and each other for rapid response and informed decision making.

Today, it’s "government to go" as people seek to gain more secure and seamless mobile access to information from nearly anywhere. For regional and national organisations, that means extending access to workers at the point of interaction. Their performance – and the welfare of others – may depend on it.

That’s why many government organisations worldwide collaborate with HP to leverage innovative solutions, technology and services that can provide access to the real-time, mission-critical information people need – moving information from the hub of the data centre into the hands of those who need it.

In fact, in April, 2005, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency awarded HP a contract to improve the performance of mission-critical computer networks. The project seeks to improve the reliability of TCP/IP, the basic communication system on which the entire Internet is based. In one proposed scenario, the new approaches would be used to enhance ship-to-ship communication between vessels using digital wireless connections and high-earth orbit satellites.

Back on Earth, it all comes down to taking advantage of wireless and mobility solutions to do things in new ways: with the goal of accessing nearly any information that’s needed at the right time and more securely from almost anywhere – empowering workers to be more effective to deliver faster results.

End-to-end mobility

Whether you have a mobility strategy in place already or are just beginning to assess mobility advantages, HP is ready to help. Networking experts from HP Services can work with you to plan, design, implement, manage and support multi-vendor mobility and wireless solutions that are flexible, scalable and have enhanced security features from the back-end infrastructure to the front-end access devices.

In concert with strategic third-party providers, HP has the solutions and resources to meet your specific needs. This includes infrastructure components like highly available servers, reliable access devices and networking equipment, along with specific applications, middleware, management software, security consulting, enterprise integration and more. And they’re all backed by our customer service and support expertise, as well as our commitment to bring it all together to work for you.

For example, a software application developed by the U.S. Army and deployed on HP iPAQ Pocket PCs allows medics to access information on the battlefield to improve treatment and make faster, more informed decisions about injured soldiers. First responders retrieve information from the back-end HP Integrity server infrastructure – such as immunization records or current medications – with just a few clicks to determine treatment and transmit vital information to other care givers.

At the Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA), HP Services stepped in as managed services provider to create and manage one of North America’s largest wireless LAN environments for a new terminal. A scalable wireless infrastructure includes 260 access points for a highly mobile workforce and ties into HP ProLiant servers running critical applications, such as baggage tracking solutions that record baggage information via handheld devices at check in.

Integrated care and services

HP’s integration expertise, backed by standards-based HP technology and solutions, can integrate the siloed, disconnected systems that characterise government IT operations – for interoperability across multiple applications, programs, departments and agencies and valuable insight into citizen care and protection.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs uses wireless connections to improve patient safety at more than 170 medical centres. At the bedside, Nurses use HP iPAQ Pocket PCs to match bar codes on medications with those on patient wristbands to verify and update medical records. Data is transmitted to other databases, including the computerised prescriber order entry and patient records systems. Clinicians view patient medication and history online to make prescribing judgments.

HP joined forces with a geographic information system (GIS) software provider to deliver an advanced fire-fighting solution. Seven agencies within the Mountain Area Safety Taskforce (MAST) in Southern California collaborate over long- and short-term strategies for forest protection. MAST uses wireless HP iPAQ Pocket PCs and GIS software to map fires in real-time and plan a coordinated response – enabling command centres, fire fighters, and support organisations to access information to save lives, homes and property.

As systems integrator for the Sacramento Police Department, HP Services collaborated with other software and hardware suppliers to equip nearly 190 patrol cars with wireless connectivity to a back-end mainframe, quickly delivering warrant and parolee information to officers. HP also helped create a wireless video down link system to deliver live video feeds from patrol cars and police helicopters to supervisory vehicles to coordinate response and track criminals under pursuit.

Digital Cities
Looking to enhance communication and collaboration across city services, many cities in the U.S. and abroad are working with HP to set up metro-scale wireless networks, called "digital cities." These communities use municipal wireless broadband systems based on HP technology to better equip police and fire personnel and provide free wireless network access to citizens to enrich education and grow local commerce.

Security and control

Leveraging our years of experience working with government agencies and our award-winning security consulting practice, we can help you develop and implement security policies, practices, technology and tools for controlling network access. This helps to greatly reduce user complexity and the need for invasive and costly modifications as you roam between multiple networks that deliver expanded access.

For example, as part of the Veteran’s Administration mobility solution above, HP helped to implement a solution that assists in addressing security management issues at the individual medical centre level, as well as at the national level as facilities communicate information across the network.

Our security solutions can help you assess your status, comply with regulations and build, manage and support a trusted infrastructure that can enable more secure and seamless network roaming while you control access to resources from data centre to device. Most importantly, our security solutions are built into our solutions right from the start, not bolted on afterwards so you can take advantage of them from the get-go.

HP solutions for government: Good to go

Your organisation is more on the move than ever before. HP can help you get the time-critical access you need for supporting operations in the field, collaborating across the organisation with enhanced security capabilities, making informed decisions and accelerating response – nearly anywhere your mission takes you.
