Access - Educational access for all

HP is helping the Mediterranean island of Sardinia establish a true community of education – addressing the issue of rural depopulation while ensuring new levels of cooperation and inclusive education for residents of every locality and ability.

With a population spread out across small, sometimes remote communities, Sardinia faces the major challenge of rural depopulation – due in part to the lack of good, consistent educational facilities in the region.

A key priority for the Sardinian Regional Education Administration is therefore to provide equal access to good educational resources and programmes. To achieve it, a Managed Learning Environment (MLE) has been introduced to link all 543 schools, 15,000 teachers and 150,000 students.

The aims of the project are to encourage the sharing of resources and best practices among teachers, to facilitate new methods of teaching and learning, and to provide better access to resources and materials for students.

With demonstrated experience of large and complex projects and working in the education sector, HP was the ideal partner for this visionary project, and took responsibility for overall management, application architecture and security framework design, and hardware deployment – including over 8,000 PCs, 100 servers and a range of peripherals.

HP also assembled a consortium of specialist partners to deliver the required educational environment, e-learning content and cultural background.

Was it worth it?

This combined effort has created a successful MLE that provides the communications, tools and resources necessary for a high quality education. Already, it is delivering many positive outcomes.

Teachers can share resources and best practice simply and effectively. Students can enjoy access to high-quality learning materials and programmes at school and at home, irrespective of their ability, disability or location. New opportunities are arising for distance learning, self-paced programmes, and interactive and collaborative education. What’s more, communication between students, teachers and parents has improved significantly.

The project is already showing a marked improvement in the overall standard of education on the island, and as a result is helping to achieve the goal of slowing the decline in the rural population.
