Increasing Productivity While Decreasing Costs

by Jan S. Smith

Apr. 2004 -- When the University of Lincoln in the U.K. needed a variable cost, total print management solution, it came to HP for assistance. HP helped the University of Lincoln significantly increase productivity, while saving over £100,000 in imaging and printing costs in the first year.

The University of Lincoln was founded in the town of Lincoln, U.K., in 1996, to serve the interests of a community which had not previously had a university. Last year, it was one of the U.K.'s fastest growing universities in terms of enrollment.

But its rapid growth came with complaints from students and staff that its printers and imaging systems were not keeping up with the latest technology. There was a great deal of wasted paper and long print queues, and printing was costing the university a substantial amount of money each year. Without an optimized imaging and printing environment, the university was lacking accountability and the ability to recover printing costs.

Customized solution

It didn't take long before HP and its partner, SafeCom, addressed these problems with a customized solution which included:

  • Balanced deployment of multifunction devices — 85 HP 9000 multifunction printers were installed across the campus.
  • Total print management with variable cost — the reseller bills the university on a "click charge" basis.
  • "Pull" printing with charge back

The University of Lincoln is now enjoying increased productivity, decreased costs, and improved accountability and cost recovery.

 Specific results achieved include:

  • Print volume reduced by 25% (through decreased waste)
  •  £100,000 (one hundred thousand pounds) savings in first year
  • £1,000,000 (one million pounds) capital cost eliminated
This is another example of HP helping customers maximize their return on investment by helping them reduce costs, increase productivity and/or increase marketing effectiveness. This public sector solution should be applicable not only to other university prospects, but also to many enterprise customers as well.
